The Project to Restore the
The Restoration Plan |
|
The Przerosl Jewish Cemetery is being restored in four phases. In Phase 1, a representative of the PJCRP visits Przerosl to inspect the cemetery site and to make preliminary recommendations for the restoration project. He meets with local town officials to discuss the project and to enlist the town's support. Rabbi Michael Schudrich (Chief Rabbi of Poland and PJCRP Halachic Coordinator) reviews the Phase 1 report. In Phase 2, the PJCRP arranges for an official legal survey of the site and files paperwork for the permits that must be obtained before the project can begin. Rabbi Schudrich (or a member of his staff) visits Przerosl to ensure that all religious issues are addressed before the work actually begins. In Phase 3, the cemetery grounds are restored. Vegetation is cleared, fallen headstones are righted and reset, broken headstones are repaired. All headstones are cleaned; the inscriptions are transcribed, translated, and posted on the project website. In Phase 4, the cemetery restoration is completed, using local labor and materials to as great an extent as possible. The wall and the gates are rebuilt, and a commemorative monument is erected. A metal plaque is placed near the gates of the cemetery, inscribed in three languages (English, Polish, and Hebrew), describing the history of the site and acknowledging the efforts of those who contributed to the success of the project. |
